Joomla Vs Drupal

Drupal is a Content Management Framework that allows people to create a functional website. It is an open-source web development platform released under the GNU Public License. In this article, we are going to compare Joomla with Drupal to find out their pros and cons. We are comparing in terms of some aspects, as shown below:

Ease of Use

Joomla

Joomla provides an easy to use Control Panel as soon as you log in to your Joomla account. There are a lot of options structured in a proper manner, which help users creating a website easily. However, it may not look familiar to the beginners.

Apart from it, Joomla includes several options in each section. For example, if you are going to create an article in Joomla, then you will get a powerful text editor. It includes almost all the formatting options that you may require to produce excellent content for your site.

Drupal

Drupal does not offer a powerful dashboard like Joomla. It contains limited options in the dashboard. However, you can access advanced options once you start going deeper through those options.

On the other side, Drupal does not offer advanced editor when it comes to create new content. It includes basic formatting options because Drupal assumes that you already know about web development. Therefore, Drupal is not going to be an easy platform for those who do not have basic knowledge of web development.

Customization

Joomla

Joomla provides the customization options with the templates and extensions. There are several free and paid templates available to use. Joomla does not allow users to search and install templates directly from the administration area. You need to search and install them manually.

Drupal

Drupal has the same issue as Joomla. It also does not provide an option to search and install the themes and modules directly from the administration area. Just like Joomla, you are required to search the theme or module on the web and locate the URL of that zip file. Then, Drupal will access the URL and install the module or theme on your site. Drupal has more module options if it is compared with Joomla extensions.

Popularity and Costing

Joomla

There are many more people working on Joomla than they are working on Drupal. It means that you will get more support from the community, blogs, and forums.

Joomla is easy to use and includes most of the features out of the box. It does not require you to have core knowledge of any language. However, if you want to hire a professional or developer to manage your site, then you can get at a reasonable price.

Drupal

Drupal is said to be little complicated for beginners as it needs you to have a better understanding of HTML, CSS, and PHP. The number of websites running on Joomla is less than the websites running on Drupal. Because of less popularity, you have to invest little more than Joomla when it comes to hiring a professional or a developer.

Security

Joomla

Joomla actively informs users regarding security incidents and vulnerabilities through their official RSS feed. Joomla takes a serious approach to any security concern and patches it up on priority. Joomla is targeted more by hackers because of its popularity than Drupal.

Joomla does not include an automatic update feature in the core settings. You need to install an extension to enable this feature.

Drupal

Just like Joomla, Drupal also does not provide an automatic update feature in its core settings. However, there is a module (Automatic Updates Module) to add this feature with Drupal.

Drupal is mostly used for government institutions, and other large, security-conscious platforms because of its lockdown security feature. Drupal publishes the detailed security reports and is more transparent about its security than others. Drupal is also known for the least number of hacked websites, which defines that it is more secure than other CMS like Joomla or WordPress.
